Fiona Viotti: Three “fake news” stories to avoid from teacher-student sex scandal

The prestigious Bishops College in Cape Town is under an intense media siege, after it was reported that a 30-year-old female teacher had molested “several” pupils at the school. Fiona Viotti is fighting the claims made against her, and has since hired top lawyer William Booth to aid her defence.

It’s understood that the water polo coach was the subject of a complaint from an 18-year-old student. The school have since been made aware of separate inappropriate relationships involving Fiona Viotti and the school’s other learners. The teacher is is the niece of former Bok rugby coach Nick Mallett.

Bishops College – Who is Fiona Viotti?

Guy Pearson, Principal of Bishops College, issued the following communication this week:

“I am aware that there has been a lot of talk and speculation in the Bishops community and in the general public about the inappropriate behaviour of one of our teachers at the College. We are taking this very seriously. The teacher has resigned with immediate effect, and we have appointed an independent attorney to undertake an investigation.

However, in such salacious cases as these, it’s important to remember that some people can get a little carried away. We’ve identified some of the false claims doing the rounds, to set the record straight. It’s worth remembering that disseminating fake news in a case like this only causes more harm to the victims.

Bishops sex scandal: Busting fake news about Fiona Viotti

Fiona Viotti has not left the country

This rumour was quashed on Tuesday by William Booth. It was suggested that the educator had skipped South Africa for the UK, in an alleged bid to escape the cold pursuit of justice. But according to her legal team, she remains firmly rooted in the country.

The claim she molested “47 boys” remains unverified

One that’s been doing the rounds on Twitter has to be shot down for its sheer lunacy. The school confirmed multiple learners have now spoken-up about there experiences with Fiona Viotti, but there’s no base to allegations that she had sexually-inappropriate relations with 47 children.

Criminal charges have not yet been laid… yet

A clear distinction that has to be made is that the school is still handling things internally. She may face criminal charges down the line, and the issue may soon be escalated, but Fiona Viotti has not yet been the subject of an official police complaint. The school and her legal team have confirmed this.

However, you – yes, you – might end up with a criminal charge if you’re not careful. It has been alleged that the teacher has several nudes and illicit videos that have since been circulated on social media. If you share content that ends up being proved false, that’s a criminal offence. So play it smart and avoid distributing anything like that on your social media or any form of group chats you may be a part of.
